String Quartet No. 1 is divided into three movements: Points, Lines, and Shines. The titles of all three are derived from a small drawing from my partner Serena Bailey. As much as the music does pair with this drawing, the musical components and inspirations truly come from a simple love of the genre and a desire to explore what the ensemble is capable of. Given the extensive collection of music for the string quartet, the vast library of sounds the group is capable of producing is very apparent. Taking those centuries of music as inspiration, I specifically focus on in on the subtle differences and changes between these sounds and extended techniques, ideally fitting the piece into the wonderful legacy of string quartets preceding this one.
